Organizational Unit Overview

The Department of Comparative Medicine is a basic science department in the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. Our team supports excellent science through a comprehensive program of humane and ethical animal care and use.
Department of Comparative Medicine cares for a variety of species in several facilities across all East Carolina University campuses. We provide barrier, containment, and quarantine housing, as well as surgical and technical support.
The animal care and use program at East Carolina University is USDA Registered (#55-R-0010), PHS assured (D16-00294), and fully accredited by AAALAC International.
Job Duties         
The Department of Comparative Medicine in the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University is searching for a collegial, team-oriented laboratory animal veterinarian to join our faculty supporting a fully AAALAC accredited, campus-wide animal care and use program. The duties of the selected candidate will include the following:
  • Participating in the provision of excellent veterinary and preventive medical care
  • Sharing emergency and holiday on-call rotations;
  • Advising and collaborating with investigators in the development and implementation of research projects;
  • Participating in academic course instruction and animal care and research staff training;
  • Serving on and supporting IACUC activities;
  • Participating in ensuring compliance with USDA, OLAW, and AAALAC International; and
  • Any other duties as assigned by the department chair.
Position available as fixed-term or tenure-track at the title/rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor.
Minimum Education/Experience
The successful candidate must have a DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary college or its equivalent as defined by the AVMA Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates, with at least 2 years of training or experience in laboratory animal medicine or related practice, and ability to be licensed in North Carolina.
A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team and excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

The Comparative Medicine Branch (CMB) of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Research Triangle Park, North Carolina is recruiting a Staff Scientist for the Veterinary Medicine Section (VMS) under the leadership of Dr. Terry Blankenship-Paris, Head.  The VMS is a service core combining research, training, and regulatory compliance with all animal research regulations.   
 
The Staff Scientist, working under the direction of the Head, VMS will have responsibilities for (but not limited to)
  1. Review of animal study protocols and performance of veterinary prereview
  2. Development and application of animal research refinement techniques
  3. Oversight of animal research projects
  4. Clinical oversight of rodent colonies
  5. Rodent surgical planning, assistance, and performance 
  6. Oversight of imaging and physiological instrumentation 
  7. Investigator training on clinical, surgical, and technical procedures 
  8. Rotating weekend and holiday on-call availability
  9. Mentoring summer students, veterinary students, and laboratory animal residents rotating through VMS.
 
A Staff Scientist is a NIH employee generally appointed to a time-limited, renewable position to support the long-term research of a Principal Investigator. Staff Scientists do not receive independent resources, although they often work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the laboratory. 
 
Qualifications: Candidates must possess a DVM degree, board certification with the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, experience with rodent animal models including imaging techniques (fluoroscopy, ultrasound, radiography), evidence of successfully working both independently and as a member of a team, and excellent oral and written communication skills.
 
Salary/benefits: This is a federal full-time equivalent position, and a comprehensive benefits package is available. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Position Summary
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) is seeking an experienced veterinarian to join the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DCM) as an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. Duties will include laboratory animal clinical care, supervision of technical staff, oversight of regulatory compliance, consultation and training for animal users, and limited teaching of graduate and professional students as a faculty member of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the School of Medicine. A strong commitment to mentoring and collaborative research with residents as well as clinical support for investigators in the areas of infectious disease, and high-level biocontainment is preferred. This position will report to the Director of DCM. 

The animal care and use program at UNC is centrally managed by the Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) and reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Research. More than 200,000 animals are housed in 26 animal facilities and used by faculty in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health and Pharmacy, and College of Arts and Sciences. Representative species include rodents, dogs, rabbits, ferrets, nonhuman primates, aquatics, reptiles, and amphibians. UNC-Chapel Hill ranks fifth in the United States among universities in federal research funding, totaling $1.1B annually. DCM employs more than 180 individuals including 10 ACLAM- or ACVP-boarded faculty veterinarians, 6 residents in laboratory animal medicine or veterinary pathology, and 9 veterinary technicians.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Minimum qualifications include a current veterinary license in at least one state in the U.S. and the ability to become licensed in North Carolina within 6-9 months of employment. A qualified candidate will be a US-licensed veterinarian with 3 or more years of postdoctoral experience in the field of laboratory animal medicine. The candidate should have significant clinical experience at an academic or other research institution with a diverse range of species and a working knowledge of regulatory requirements for the care and use of laboratory animals. For consideration, candidates must have outstanding written and oral communications skills and mature problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) or other relevant veterinary specialty board certification or eligibility is preferred. Experience in animal biosafety level 3 (ABSL-3) containment, institutional biosafety committee (IBC), rodent surgical models, large rodent breeding colonies, genetically-altered animals, and rodent medicine is preferred.
